GUILTFILTER RECORDS new 1-piece project BlackMarket Bear plays live to help support BOB FEST (Father Bobs Foundation benefit) next Friday 13th onstage at 7pm at the Espy Basement Bar. This is what I looked like last time I played the basebent bar proper, way back in 2012:
The great Dead Rodeo and Waco Social Club are headlining and very few if any cover songs in sight I imagine, all original ozzie™ tunes. A worthy cause as they help anyone in need no matter who they are and thats a lot of folks right now. Governments do not give a shit about the struggling 30% of the nation and they never have, they are beholden to big business to pay for their power and thats why I have never voted and know the only way to make things fair is to support people like Father Bob who actually gave a shit --- Doors 6pm, $15 and ticket link here
BOOK REVIEW: THE IDIOT
The Idiot 1868 - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Been reading my boy Fyodor this week, one of his better known novels and his personal favourite; although he was not happy with the actual quality of the writing as he was in Switzerland at the time and extremely poverty stricken and with a young family. I do think it shows in the shambolic plot and uneven chapter resolutions although it does have something very fantastic at it’s core: a simple and honest person completely befuddling and confusing the large and complex Chekhov-like cast of characters who just cannot quite commit to the idea that he is not out for greed and power and money like they are. It is in fact a very funny novel and the title character Myshkin is hilarious and real and leaps off the page like a 50ft torpedo by Royce Hart sailing over Punt Rd and into the cars.
Personally I found Dostoevsky’s other books, Notes Frome The Underground, Crime And Punishment and Demons (a fantastic read) much more complex and satisfying and yet The Idiot is charismatic and remains in the bloodstream for many days after reading and, like nearly all his novels, it gives you a visceral sense of late ninteenth century Russia, and espessially St Petersburg, as it attempts to define itself as an elite European nation when, in fact, it is part classical Europe and equal parts Asiatic, nomadic and, with it’s steppes and frezing winters, very unlike all the other European countries.
A great read and available as a free audio book on openculture dot com.
